Lipscani District – August 2009. Rapid changes are underway from ‘something’ to ‘something’. In-between it is strangely dynamic nightlife place amidst torn-up streets, abandoned buildings, graffiti, squatters, and commercial store-fronts (wedding dresses, books, pseudo antiques), and elegant 1890s ‘Beaux Arts’ styled public buildings.
The district is in central ‘old’ Bucharest along the Dumbovita River. Left to decay and to squatters during the communist and post-communist era, it is now viewed as the up-and-coming ‘chic quartier’.
