Helicopter Views of Romania – 12 / Dan Dimancescu October 2010

Seen in early morning light, a striking feature of Romania’s vast argricultural lands are the small family-sized parcels that dominate many areas. Many plots are hand-farmed and owners travel hours on foot or by horse-cart to reach them. Economically inefficient, they are result of land distribution to about 3-4 million individuals after the 1989 fall of Communist rule. Ironically, these may prove more viable in the long-term since they are still largely organic and therefore more naturally fertile. In contrast industrialized fields are chemically dependent and thus lose their natural fertility. October 2010
