– 1700 miles (2800 km) Ledyard Canoe Club of Dartmouth College expedition from Ulm, Germany, to Sulina on the Black Sea; a unique trip because of open-travel permits issued the expedition by communist Danubian countries during ‘Iron Curtain’ period: Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, and Romania. Published by Natl. Geog. in July 1965.

1985 Ledyard Canoe Club Korean Islands Expedition

– 500 mile (800 km) kayak expedition around the So. Korean Peninsula’s archipelago of 3000 islands. Chart above shows a one day crossing and unpredictable course outcomes in a thick fog and in an area of severe tide rips (which were used to advantage in 1595 to defeat Japan’s invading armada). Sponsored by Natl. Geog. and MBC-TV (Seoul). Film by David Hamlin
