This was a vast project atop farm fields on the urban boundary providing lodging for in excess of 60,000 people. Very little was novel in the planning scheme itself which consisted of ‘blocs’ in various heights constructed rapidly in varied cement-based techniques. Interspersed were state-managed shopping complexes, schools, and other amenities. Such projects marked a high-point in Communist-inspired social development. Ensuing years during the 1970s and 1980s were marked by serious declines in standards of living and political paranoia.
